Mardi Gras

Its Mardi Gras in the land of purple! Unfortuneately we do not live in New Orleans but we do live where we can get to some parades. We actually have 2 in our area. One was last weekend and it was lame. The kids hardly got any beads. But we got to hang out with one of my husband's oldest friends and his family.
Mardi Gras has gotten such a bad reputation for being this crazy drunken boob showin' mass hysteria party. But nothing could be further from the truth. Well, if you go to a daytime parade anyway. The first parade I went to in NO was February 1993. And I was very shocked to see LOTS of kids. People actually build a ladder highchair so the kids can be high up to get beads and be strapped in and safe. It really is just a community party where everyone gets together and has fun. You can sometimes bond with your "neighbors" but really all bets are off when the floats go by. The only exception is kids. No grown up is going to fight a kid over some beads. Sure there is drinking but not crazy. These people are professionals they drink all the time! If you go to Audubon Zoo you can buy individual bottles of wine and beer. Also at the IMAX. Seems a little odd to me but you know what they say: Let the good times roll!
